How are multiplication and division connected?

Division is multiplication in reverse. Three numbers make a fact family: 7 × 8 = 56, 8 × 7 = 56, 56 ÷ 8 = 7 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8. Knowing one fact gives you all four.

This game mixes both, so you have to read the sign. If division is slower, practise division facts on their own.

Tips for mixed multiplication and division

Check the sign before you answer. Mixing × and ÷ is the most common mistake in mixed practice.

For division, turn it into a missing number: 56 ÷ 8 → 8 × □ = 56.

If a whole table is slow in both directions, go back to that table’s own game.

Multiplication and Division questions and answers

What is a fact family?

A fact family is a set of multiplication and division facts that use the same three numbers. 3, 4 and 12 make 3 × 4 = 12, 4 × 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

Why practise multiplication and division together?

Children who learn them together see that every division fact is a multiplication fact they already know, which makes division much faster.

What numbers are used?

Every fact from 2 × 2 to 12 × 12, and the matching divisions from 4 ÷ 2 to 144 ÷ 12. There are no remainders.
