How to get confident with fractions and decimals

A fraction is a number of equal parts: 3/4 means 3 parts out of 4. Finding a fraction of a number links fractions to division, because 1/4 of 20 is 20 ÷ 4 = 5, so it’s the best place to start once the division facts are secure.

Next, equivalent fractions show that 2/3 and 8/12 are the same size, and adding fractions with the same denominator adds the top numbers only.

Decimals are fractions out of 10 and 100: 0.3 is 3 tenths, and 0.3 + 0.7 = 1 just like 3 + 7 = 10. Every question in these games has a whole-number answer, so children type the missing part instead of a fraction.

Questions and answers

How do you type fractions in these games?

You don’t have to. Each question shows the fraction with one number missing, like 2/3 = □/12, and you type just that number.

What age are the fractions games for?
