What are equivalent fractions?

Equivalent fractions are different fractions that are the same size, like 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8. Multiply or divide the top and bottom by the same number and the fraction keeps its value: 2/3 = 8/12 because both parts were multiplied by 4.

To find the missing number, work out what the known bottom numbers were multiplied by, then do the same to the top. When that’s quick, try adding fractions.

Equivalent Fractions skills

  • Finding equivalent fractions
  • Simplifying fractions
  • Multiplying and dividing top and bottom by the same number

Level: Grades 3–5 (ages 8–11)

Tips for equivalent fractions

Compare the two bottom numbers first: 3 → 12 is × 4, so the top is × 4 too.

To simplify, divide top and bottom by a number that goes into both.

Times tables help a lot here, so practise mixed times tables if the steps feel slow.

How do you check two fractions are equivalent?

Cross-multiply: 2/3 and 8/12 are equivalent because 2 × 12 = 24 and 3 × 8 = 24.

Most children meet equivalent fractions in grade 3 or 4 (Year 4 in the UK) and simplify them in grade 5.
