How to solve the 24 Game

The 24 Game is a mental math puzzle: you get four numbers and must combine all of them with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to make exactly 24. For example, 2, 3, 4 and 5 can be solved as (5 + 3 − 2) × 4 = 24.

A good strategy is to look for a pair that makes a factor of 24, such as 3 and 8, 4 and 6, or 2 and 12, then work out how to make its partner with the other two numbers. Strong times tables make this much faster, so practise mixed times tables and division facts if you get stuck.

Play the 24 Game at Easy, Medium or Hard, or try the Daily 24, three new puzzles every day that are the same for everyone.

Questions and answers

What are math puzzles good for?

They turn arithmetic practice into problem solving. Instead of answering a sum, you have to find one: which numbers and operations make 24? That builds number sense, flexible thinking and fluency with all four operations.

What age are these math puzzles for?

Easy 24 Game puzzles suit children from about 8 who know their times tables. Medium, Hard and the Daily 24 are a good challenge for older students and adults.

Is there a new puzzle every day?

Yes. The Daily 24 has three new puzzles every day at midnight UTC, the same for everyone.
