How do you add and subtract tens?
When you add or take away a multiple of 10, the ones digit stays the same and only the tens change. 47 + 30 = 77 (4 tens + 3 tens), and 82 − 40 = 42 (8 tens − 4 tens).
It’s a step on from adding 10, and a big help in two-digit subtraction: 82 − 47 is 82 − 40 − 7.

Adding and Subtracting Tens questions and answers
Why does the ones digit stay the same?
A multiple of 10 has no ones, so adding or subtracting it only changes the tens. 47 is 4 tens and 7 ones, and 47 + 30 is 7 tens and 7 ones.
Do the answers go over 100 or below 0?
No. Every answer is between 0 and 99.
What grade learns this?
Adding and subtracting multiples of 10 within 100 is a first-grade standard in the US, and a Year 2 objective in England.
