What is the quickest way to subtract 9?
Take away 10, then add 1 back. 9 is one less than 10, so 32 − 9 is 32 − 10 = 22, plus 1 = 23. It’s quicker and safer than counting back 9.
You need to be quick at subtracting 10 first. The same idea works for adding: see adding 9.

Tips for subtracting 9
Take 10, give 1 back: 41 − 9 → 31 → 32.
The ones digit of the answer is one more than the starting ones digit: 23 − 9 = 14 (3 → 4).
For teen numbers, it’s the ones digit plus 1: 15 − 9 = 6.
