What is the quickest way to add 9?
Add 10, then take 1 away. 9 is one less than 10, so 26 + 9 is 26 + 10 = 36, minus 1 = 35. It’s much faster than counting on 9.
You need to be quick at adding 10 first. The same trick works for taking away 9 in subtracting 9.

Add 10, then go back 1: 47 + 9 → 57 → 56.
The ones digit of the answer is one less than the number you started with: 34 + 9 = 43 (4 → 3).
