How do you find 10 more or 10 less?

Change the tens digit by one and keep the ones digit the same. 10 more than 63 is 73, and 10 less than 63 is 53. On a hundred chart, that’s one row down or one row up.

Children who can do this without counting understand place value. It leads into adding and subtracting tens and two-digit addition.
