Two-Digit Plus One-Digit With Regrouping Games Online Free
Add a single digit to a two-digit number when the ones cross the next ten, like 47 + 6 or 38 + 5. Make the next ten, then add the rest.
Type answers on your keyboard, or tap the number pad.
Practise these again:
How do you add with regrouping in your head?
Fill up to the next ten, then add what’s left. For 47 + 6, 47 needs 3 to make 50, and 6 − 3 leaves 3, so 47 + 6 = 53. In written column addition, the same step is “carrying” a ten.
It’s the bridging through 10 strategy with bigger numbers. If it’s too hard, start with two-digit plus one-digit without regrouping.

Tips for regrouping
Ask “how many to the next ten?” first. 38 needs 2 to make 40.
Split the other number: 38 + 5 → 38 + 2 + 3 → 40 + 3 → 43.
Check the tens: when the ones cross ten, the tens digit goes up by exactly one.
| 47 + 6 | 50 + 3 = 53 |
|---|---|
| 38 + 5 | 40 + 3 = 43 |
| 29 + 4 | 30 + 3 = 33 |
| 56 + 8 | 60 + 4 = 64 |
| 75 + 9 | 80 + 4 = 84 |
Two-Digit Plus One-Digit With Regrouping questions and answers
What does regrouping mean in addition?
When the ones add up to 10 or more, 10 ones are regrouped as 1 ten. In 47 + 6, 7 + 6 = 13 ones, which is 1 ten and 3 ones, so the answer is 53. It’s also called carrying.
Is it better to add in your head or in columns?
For a two-digit plus a one-digit number, mental strategies like making the next ten are quicker. Column addition is useful for bigger numbers.
What grade learns addition with regrouping?
Regrouping within 100 is taught in first and second grade in the US, and in Year 2 and Year 3 in England.
