How do you add a one-digit number to a two-digit number?
Add the ones and keep the tens. For 34 + 5, 4 + 5 = 9, so 34 + 5 = 39. In this game the ones never go past 9, so the tens digit always stays the same.
It uses the facts from addition within 10. When it’s easy, move on to sums that cross a ten in two-digit plus one-digit with regrouping.
