What is peg solitaire?
Peg solitaire is a one-player puzzle played on a board of holes filled with pegs. A move is a jump: one peg hops over a neighbouring peg, straight across or down, into an empty hole just beyond, and the peg it jumped over is removed. The goal is to clear the board until just one peg remains.
The game dates back to 17th-century France. It’s also known as Brainvita, Hi-Q and Solo Noble, and many people simply call it the peg game. This version uses the 33-hole English board. Start with Plus (9 pegs) and Pyramid (16 pegs), then try Classic, where every hole but the centre starts full. For another jumping game, play Konane against the computer.
How to play Peg Solitaire
- Pick a peg that has another peg next to it and an empty hole just beyond, in a straight line across or down. Diagonal jumps aren’t allowed.
- Drag the peg over its neighbour into the empty hole (or tap the peg, then the hole). The jumped peg is removed.
- Keep jumping. The puzzle is solved when only one peg is left.
- If no jumps are left and there’s more than one peg, use Undo to go back, or Clear to start again. Hint makes the next jump of a winning line.

Tips for peg solitaire
Work from the outside in. Pegs stranded in the far arms of the cross are the hardest to clear later.
Think in packages: three pegs in an L-shape next to an empty hole can usually be cleared together in a few jumps.
Try to keep the pegs in one group. A peg left on its own with no neighbours can never be removed.
In Classic, finishing with the last peg in the centre hole is the traditional perfect game.

Yes. On the 33-hole English board with the centre empty, you can always finish with one peg, and even with that peg in the centre. It takes 31 jumps.

One peg is a perfect game, and one peg in the centre is the traditional “genius” finish. Two or three pegs left is still a good score on the Classic board.
