What is Konane?
Kōnane is a traditional two-player strategy game from Hawaii, played on a board full of black and white stones in a checkerboard pattern. It is sometimes called Hawaiian checkers.
The rules are simple: you only ever move by jumping over one of your opponent’s stones, which captures it. There are no draws. The first player who has no jump available loses.
How to play Konane Board Game
- The board starts full, with black and white stones alternating like a checkerboard. Black moves first.
- To open, Black removes one black stone from the centre or a corner. White then removes a white stone next to the gap.
- After that, every move is a jump: move one of your stones over an orthogonally adjacent enemy stone into the empty square behind it, and remove the stone you jumped. No diagonal moves.
- You may keep jumping with the same stone, but only in the same direction. You can stop after any jump.
- If you can’t jump on your turn, you lose. Play against the computer at Easy, Medium or Hard, or choose 2 Players to take turns on one device. Undo takes back your last move, and an unfinished game is saved if you leave the page.

Tips for Konane
Konane is about moves, not captures. Before you jump, count how many jumps you’ll have left and how many your opponent will have.
A stone on the edge can only be jumped along the edge, never from the side, so edge stones are harder to capture.
Late in the game, try to leave your opponent with no jumps while you still have one in reserve.
Konane Board Game questions and answers
How do you play Konane?
Fill the board with alternating black and white stones. After each player removes one stone to open the board, players take turns jumping an opponent’s stone horizontally or vertically. The first player who can’t jump loses.
Can you make multiple jumps in Konane?
Yes, but only in a straight line. After one jump you may jump again in the same direction with the same stone. You can’t turn a corner, and you can stop whenever you like.
Can Konane end in a draw?
No. Every move removes a stone, so the game always ends, and the player who can’t move loses.
What size board is used?
Traditional boards were often much larger than a chessboard. This version offers 6 × 6 for quick games and 8 × 8, the most common size today.
