How Pente works
Pente is a five-in-a-row game in the gomoku family, with one big twist: captures. Players take turns placing stones on the intersections of the board.
You win by making a line of five (or more) of your stones in a row, across, down or diagonally, or by capturing five pairs of your opponent’s stones.
How to play Pente Game
- Blue goes first, and the first stone is always placed on the centre point.
- Players take turns placing one stone on any empty point.
- Capture by placing stones on both ends of exactly two enemy stones in a line (across, down or diagonally). The two captured stones are removed. You can’t capture one stone, or three.
- Placing your own stone between two enemy stones is safe: captures only happen when the capturing stone is placed.
- Win with five or more stones in a row, or by capturing five pairs (ten stones). Play against the computer at Easy, Medium or Hard, or choose 2 Players to take turns on one device. Undo takes back your last move, and an unfinished game is saved if you leave the page.

Tips for Pente
An open three (three in a row with both ends empty) is a threat: if it isn’t blocked, it becomes an open four, which can’t be stopped.
Watch out for pairs. Two of your stones side by side with an enemy stone at one end can be captured next turn.
Captures also break up lines. Taking a pair out of your opponent’s row of four is a good way to defend.
Pente Game questions and answers
How do you win at Pente?
Make a line of five or more of your stones in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally), or capture five pairs of your opponent’s stones.
How do captures work in Pente?
If exactly two of your opponent’s stones sit in a line, and you place stones on both ends, those two are captured and removed. Only pairs can be captured, and moving into a flanked position yourself is safe.
What is the difference between Pente and Gomoku?
Both are five-in-a-row games, but Gomoku has no captures. In Pente, capturing pairs is a second way to win and a way to break up your opponent’s lines.
Does this version use the tournament rule?
No. The first stone goes on the centre point, but the first player’s second stone can go anywhere. Pente® is a trademark of its owner; this is an independent online version of the game.
