How Quoridor works

Quoridor is a two-player abstract strategy game. Each player has one pawn and ten walls. On your turn you either move your pawn one square or place a wall. The first pawn to reach the opposite side of the 9 × 9 board wins.

Walls are two squares long and sit in the grooves between squares. They block pawns, but a wall can never cut a pawn off from its goal completely. There must always be a way through.

How to play Quoridor Game

  1. Blue starts at the bottom and must reach the top row. Red starts at the top and must reach the bottom row. Blue moves first.
  2. On your turn, either move your pawn one square up, down, left or right, or place one of your ten walls.
  3. A wall covers two squares’ worth of groove. Walls can’t overlap or cross another wall, and you can’t place a wall that leaves either pawn with no route to its goal.
  4. If the pawns are face to face, you may jump straight over the other pawn. If a wall or the board edge is behind it, jump diagonally to either side instead.
  5. The first pawn to reach any square on the far row wins. Play against the computer at Easy, Medium or Hard, or choose 2 Players to take turns on one device. Undo takes back your last move, and an unfinished game is saved if you leave the page.

Tips for Quoridor

Count both paths every turn. If your route is shorter than your opponent’s, just run. If it’s longer, a wall may be worth more than a step.

Don’t spend your walls too early. Walls placed near the end of the race, right in front of the other pawn, usually cost them the most steps.

Watch for walls that would block you too. A good wall adds steps to your opponent’s path without adding any to yours.

Quoridor Game questions and answers

What are the rules of Quoridor?

Each player moves a pawn one square at a time or places a wall. Walls are two squares long and can’t completely block a pawn. Pawns can jump over each other when face to face. The first pawn to reach the far side of the board wins.

How many walls does each player get?

In the two-player game each player gets 10 walls. Once you’ve placed all ten, you can only move your pawn.

Can a wall block the path completely?

No. Every wall must leave both pawns at least one route to their goal row. The game won’t let you place a wall that breaks this rule.

Is this the official Quoridor?

It follows the standard two-player rules on a 9 × 9 board. Quoridor® is a trademark of Gigamic, which publishes the physical game; this is an independent online version of the same style of wall game.
