What is the Skyscrapers puzzle?

Skyscrapers, also called Towers, is a number logic puzzle. Every square holds a building whose height is a number from 1 to n, and each row and column has every height exactly once. The clues around the edge say how many buildings you can see from that point, because a taller building hides all the shorter ones behind it.

For example, looking along a row of 2, 1, 4, 3 from the left you see the 2 and the 4, so the clue would be 2. Some puzzles also give a few heights in the grid when the clues alone aren’t enough.

How to play Skyscrapers Puzzle

  1. Fill every square with a height from 1 to the size of the grid, using each height exactly once in every row and column.
  2. A clue outside the grid is the number of buildings visible from that side, looking along the row or column. A building is visible only if it’s taller than every building in front of it.
  3. Heights in white are given. Repeated heights turn red, and a clue turns green when its full line matches and red when it doesn’t.
  4. Tap a square, then tap a number or type it. Turn on Notes (or press N) to pencil in possibilities, and use ⌫ to clear a square. Arrow keys move between squares.
  5. Every puzzle is made fresh and checked to have exactly one solution, so it can always be solved by logic without guessing. Use Hint if you’re stuck, and pick a size at the top of the board.

Tips for Skyscrapers

A clue of 1 means the tallest building is right next to it, because it hides everything behind it.

A clue equal to the size of the grid (4 on a 4 × 4 grid) means you see every building, so the heights must go up 1, 2, 3, 4 from that side.

The tallest building can’t be too close to a big clue: next to a clue of 3, the tallest is at least two squares away.

Row of four, read from the left, and how many you can see
1, 2, 3, 44
2, 1, 4, 32
3, 4, 1, 22
4, 3, 2, 11
2, 3, 1, 43
1, 4, 2, 32

Skyscrapers Puzzle questions and answers

How do you play the Skyscrapers puzzle?

Fill the grid so every row and column has each height from 1 to n once. Each clue around the edge tells you how many buildings can be seen from there; a taller building hides every shorter building behind it.

What does a clue of 1 mean in Skyscrapers?

You can only see one building, so the tallest building must be the first one in that row or column, right next to the clue.

Is Skyscrapers the same as Towers?

Yes. The puzzle is published under both names, and sometimes as Building or Skyline puzzles. The rules are the same.

Does every Skyscrapers puzzle have one solution?

Yes. Every puzzle here is checked by a solver when it’s made. When the clues alone would allow more than one answer, a few heights are given in the grid.

Which size should I start with?

Start with 4 × 4. The heights are only 1 to 4, so it’s easy to picture which buildings hide which. Move up to 5 × 5 and 6 × 6 when the 4 × 4 puzzles feel quick.
