What is Suguru?

Suguru, also known as Tectonic or Number Blocks, is a number logic puzzle. The grid is split into regions of one to five squares. A region of two squares holds 1 and 2, a region of five holds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and no two touching squares, including diagonally, may hold the same number.

The puzzle is credited to the Japanese puzzle designer Naoki Inaba, and became popular in the Netherlands and Belgium as Tectonic. Because it only uses the numbers 1 to 5, it’s one of the friendliest number puzzles for children.

How to play Suguru

  1. Thick lines split the grid into regions. A region with k squares must contain each number from 1 to k exactly once.
  2. Two squares that touch, across, down or diagonally, can’t hold the same number, even if they’re in different regions.
  3. Numbers in white are given. A number turns red when it repeats in its region or touches the same number.
  4. Tap a square, then tap a number or type it. Turn on Notes (or press N) to pencil in possibilities, and use ⌫ to clear a square. Arrow keys move between squares.
  5. Every puzzle is made fresh and checked to have exactly one solution, so it can always be solved by logic without guessing. Use Hint if you’re stuck, and pick a size at the top of the board.

Tips for Suguru

A region of one square is always 1, and a region of two squares holds 1 and 2. Start with the smallest regions.

Every number blocks all eight squares around it. A 1 in one region rules out 1 for the neighbouring squares of other regions too.

Every 2 × 2 block of squares needs four different numbers, because all four squares touch each other.

Suguru questions and answers

How do you play Suguru?

Fill each region with the numbers 1 up to the number of squares in it, once each. No two squares that touch, including diagonally, may contain the same number.

Is Suguru the same as Tectonic?

Yes. Suguru is the Japanese name, and the puzzle is called Tectonic in the Netherlands and Belgium. It’s also published as Number Blocks. The rules are the same.

Is Suguru good for kids?

Yes. It only uses the numbers 1 to 5 and needs no arithmetic, so children from about 7 can play. The 5 × 5 puzzles start with extra numbers given to make them gentler.

Does every Suguru puzzle have one solution?

Yes. Every puzzle here is generated fresh and checked by a solver, so there is exactly one way to fill the grid.
