Type answers on your keyboard, or tap the number pad.

How do you subtract from 10?

Use the pairs that make ten. Since 7 + 3 = 10, 10 − 7 = 3 and 10 − 3 = 7. There are only 11 facts to learn, from 10 − 0 to 10 − 10.

If a child is still counting back, practising make ten helps, because it’s the same set of facts written as addition.

Tips for subtracting from 10

Ask “what goes with this to make 10?” For 10 − 6, 6 and 4 make 10, so the answer is 4.

Use fingers: hold up all 10, put down the number being taken away, and count what’s left up.

Subtracting from 10 is the first step towards subtracting from 20, and later from 100.
