What does “make ten” mean?
Making ten means finding two numbers that add up to 10, such as 6 and 4 or 8 and 2. There are six pairs to learn: 0 + 10, 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6 and 5 + 5.
These pairs are also called number bonds to 10. Later, children use them to add across ten: 8 + 5 is 8 + 2 to make 10, then 3 more. That’s practised in addition within 20.

Tips for making ten
Use your fingers: hold up 7, and the fingers still down show how many more make 10.
Picture a ten frame. If 6 squares are filled, 4 are empty.
Learn the pairs in order (1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7…). One number goes up as the other goes down.
Pairs that make 10 help with longer sums too. For 7 + 5 + 3, add 7 + 3 first, then 5 more. Try it in adding 3 numbers.
| 0 + 10 | 10 |
|---|---|
| 1 + 9 | 10 |
| 2 + 8 | 10 |
| 3 + 7 | 10 |
| 4 + 6 | 10 |
| 5 + 5 | 10 |
Make Ten questions and answers
How do you play make ten?
Each question shows a number and a box, like 3 + □ = 10. Type the number that goes in the box. Here it’s 7, because 3 + 7 = 10.
Is make ten good for kindergarten?
Yes. Making ten is a kindergarten standard in the US (finding the number that makes 10 with any number from 1 to 9). Use practice mode for young children so there’s no time pressure.
What is the make ten strategy?
It’s a way to add numbers that cross ten. For 9 + 6, take 1 from the 6 to make 10, then add the 5 left: 15. Children need to know their pairs to 10 first, which is what this game practises.
