What are near doubles?
Near doubles are addition facts where the two numbers are one apart, like 6 + 7 or 8 + 9. To solve one, double the smaller number and add 1.
For example, 7 + 8: double 7 is 14, and one more is 15. Children who know their doubles can answer every near double this way without counting. When near doubles feel easy, try addition within 20.

Tips for near doubles
Double the smaller number and add one: 7 + 8 → 7 + 7 = 14 → 15.
Or double the bigger number and take one away: 7 + 8 → 8 + 8 = 16 → 15.
Know your doubles first. If 6 + 6 = 12 comes instantly, 6 + 7 = 13 does too.
Every near double has an odd answer, because it’s a double (always even) plus one.

Near Doubles questions and answers
What are near doubles?
Near doubles are addition facts where the two numbers are one apart, like 4 + 5 or 8 + 9. They’re “nearly” a double, so you can use the double you know to work them out.
What is the near doubles strategy?
Find the double that’s closest, then adjust. For 8 + 9, double 8 is 16, and 9 is one more than 8, so 8 + 9 = 17. This is also called “doubles plus one”.
What’s the difference between doubles plus one and doubles minus one?
They’re two ways to solve the same fact. For 6 + 7, doubles plus one uses 6 + 6 + 1, and doubles minus one uses 7 + 7 − 1. Both give 13.
What grade learns near doubles?
Near doubles are usually taught in first and second grade (Year 1 and Year 2 in the UK), once children know their doubles to 10 + 10.
What happens when I get one wrong?
The game shows the strategy as well as the answer, for example 7 + 8 = 7 + 7 + 1 = 15. The fact then comes back a few questions later so you can try it again.
