What is counting on?
Counting on is an addition strategy: start at the bigger number and count up by the smaller one. For 14 + 3, say “14” in your head, then count 15, 16, 17.
It works best for adding 1, 2 or 3, which is what this game practises. For bigger numbers, children move on to strategies like make ten.

Tips for counting on
Don’t count the first number. Start at 14 and only count the 3: 15, 16, 17.
Always start with the bigger number. 2 + 15 is quicker as 15 + 2.
Adding 1 is just the next number, so 12 + 1 should come without counting.
Counting On questions and answers
How is counting on different from counting all?
Counting all means counting both numbers from 1 (1, 2, 3… up to 17). Counting on starts at the first number and only counts what’s added, which is much faster.
Why does the game only add 1, 2 or 3?
Counting on is quick and reliable for small numbers. Counting on by 6 or 7 is slow and easy to get wrong, so children learn other strategies for those.
What happens if I get one wrong?
The game shows the count, for example 14 + 3: 15, 16, 17. The question comes back a few questions later.
