How do you double and halve numbers?

To double a number, add it to itself or multiply by 2. For bigger numbers, double the tens and ones separately: double 34 is double 30 (60) plus double 4 (8), which is 68.

Halving is the opposite: half of 68 is 34, because 34 + 34 = 68. Doubles start with small facts like 6 + 6, practised in doubles facts.

Doubling and Halving skills

  • Doubling numbers to 50
  • Halving even numbers to 100
  • Splitting numbers into tens and ones

Level: Grades 1–3 (ages 6–9)

Tips for doubling and halving

Split into tens and ones: double 27 → double 20 is 40, double 7 is 14, so 54.

Halve tens and ones too: half of 86 → half of 80 is 40, half of 6 is 3, so 43.

When the tens digit is odd, split differently: half of 70 is 35, so half of 74 is 35 + 2 = 37.

Doubling and Halving questions and answers

How does doubling help with multiplication?

Doubling is the 2 times table, and doubling again gives the 4s and 8s. To work out 4 × 7, double 7 is 14 and double 14 is 28.

What is the doubling and halving strategy?

In multiplication you can double one number and halve the other without changing the answer. 16 × 5 is the same as 8 × 10, which is 80.

What happens when I get one wrong?

For bigger numbers the game shows the tens-and-ones split, for example double 27 = double 20 + double 7 = 40 + 14 = 54.
