What’s the difference between area and perimeter?
Area is the space inside a shape, measured in square units: length × width, so a 6 cm by 4 cm rectangle has an area of 24 cm². Perimeter is the distance around the edge: add all four sides, 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 20 cm.
Area questions are times tables and missing sides are division facts, so both get easier as those facts get quicker.

Level: Grades 3–5 (ages 8–11)
Tips for area and perimeter
Area: multiply. Perimeter: add all the way round, or double (length + width).
A square has four equal sides, so its perimeter is 4 × the side.
Missing side: width = area ÷ length.
Area and Perimeter questions and answers
What units are area and perimeter measured in?
Perimeter is a length, so it’s in cm. Area is in square units like cm², because it counts 1 cm by 1 cm squares.
What grade learns area and perimeter?
US Common Core introduces area and perimeter of rectangles in grade 3, with missing sides and harder problems in grades 4 and 5.
