How do you work out a probability?

Probability is the number of ways something can happen over the total number of equally likely outcomes. A bag with 3 red and 5 blue marbles has 8 marbles, so the probability of red is 3/8.

With two dice there are 6 × 6 = 36 outcomes. A total of 7 can be made 6 ways (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1), more than any other total.

Probability skills

  • Probability as a fraction
  • Counting outcomes for dice and coins
  • Probability of an event not happening

Level: Grades 5–7 (ages 10–13)

Tips for probability

Count the total first: that’s the bottom number of the fraction.

P(not red) = 1 − P(red), so count the parts that aren’t red.

For two dice, list the pairs: 3 + 4 and 4 + 3 count as different ways.

Probability questions and answers

How do I enter a fraction?

Each question shows the fraction with one number missing, like P(red) = 3/□. Type just the missing number.

What grade learns probability?

Simple chance language starts around grade 4. Probability as a fraction and counting outcomes are grade 7 topics in the US Common Core.
