What are the mean, median, mode and range?

The mean is the total divided by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle number once they’re in order. The mode is the number that appears most often, and the range is the biggest minus the smallest.

For 4, 8, 6, 2, 5: the total is 25 and there are 5 numbers, so the mean is 5. In order they’re 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, so the median is 5 too, and the range is 8 − 2 = 6.

Tips for mean, median and mode

Always put the numbers in order before finding the median.

For the mean, add everything up first, then divide by the count.

A rhyme helps: “Hey diddle diddle, the median’s the middle; you add and divide for the mean. The mode is the one you see the most, and the range is the difference between.”

Mean, Median and Mode questions and answers

Is the mean always a whole number in this game?

Yes. The lists are made so the total divides evenly, and every median list has an odd number of values.

What grade learns mean, median and mode?

Children meet the mean around grade 5 or 6, and all four measures are part of grade 6 statistics in the US Common Core.
